Diatomite dish mats are loved for one reason: they drink up water fast. But like anything that lives next to a sink, they need a little care to stay fresh and keep absorbing well. If your mat has started to feel damp, look stained, or carry a faint musty smell, here is exactly how to bring it back — and how to stop the problem before it starts.

Why a diatomite mat can start to smell

The mat itself is just porous mineral stone — it does not rot. Odors come from what gets trapped in the pores: grease, food residue, soap film, and trapped moisture that never fully dries. Clear those out and the smell goes with them.

The daily habit that prevents most problems

Ninety percent of mat issues come from one thing: it never gets to fully dry. After your dishes are put away, stand the mat on its edge or hang it so air reaches both sides. A mat that dries out completely between uses rarely smells or stains.

The simple deep clean

Every few weeks, give it a reset. Rinse the surface under warm water — no soap needed. For stuck-on marks, lightly sand the surface with the fine sandpaper that came with your mat (or any fine-grit paper) in small circles. This lifts off the thin top layer where stains and residue sit, exposing fresh porous stone underneath. Wipe away the dust and let it air-dry fully, ideally standing up for several hours.

Removing stubborn stains

Coffee, tea, and tomato can leave marks. A paste of baking soda and a little water, left on the stain for ten minutes and then rinsed, handles most of them. Sanding finishes anything that remains.

Killing odors

For a musty smell, sprinkle baking soda across the dry mat, leave it overnight, and brush it off in the morning. For a deeper refresh, set the fully dry mat in direct sunlight for a few hours — sun and airflow do a remarkable job.

What not to do

Skip these: do not soak the mat in soapy water (soap clogs the pores and reduces absorption), do not put it in the dishwasher, and do not use bleach or harsh chemicals that the stone can hold onto. Keep it simple — water, baking soda, light sanding, and air.

How often

Air-dry after every use, deep clean every two to four weeks depending on how hard your mat works. Treated this way, a quality diatomite mat stays fast-drying and fresh for years.
