Most people buy a stone drying mat for the daily wash-up. Then they discover it is useful for a dozen other small things, because anywhere water needs to go somewhere, an absorbent surface helps.
Draining freshly washed produce
Rinsed berries, grapes, herbs and leafy greens all need somewhere to drain. A stone mat takes the water away without the soggy paper towels, and it looks good enough to leave out while things dry.
Bottles, tumblers and anything narrow
Baby bottles, water bottles, travel mugs and tall tumblers are awkward on a rack and slow to dry. Inverted on a stone mat, the trapped water is drawn away from the rim instead of pooling.
Under the pet bowls
Enthusiastic drinkers splash. A mat under the bowls catches the overflow and keeps the floor or counter dry, and it wipes clean easily.
A landing spot by the sink
A wet colander, a rinsed jug, a dripping utensil. Having one designated absorbent surface means wet things stop being placed randomly around the counter.
Protecting the counter
The silicone base shields your countertop from scratches and water marks, so the mat doubles as a protective surface for the messier parts of prep.
One thing worth remembering: keep strongly coloured liquids such as coffee, wine and soy sauce off the stone, since it absorbs whatever meets it. For everything else, it is one of the more quietly versatile things on the counter.
